Actually, as the Envoy for the small state of Reuss-Schleiz-Greiz, Count Balduin von Zedlau has a diplomatic mission to fulfil at the Congress of Vienna. However, coordinating his love affairs in the city of wine, women and song proves to be far more of a challenge: He has to keep his wife Gabriele, the dancer Franziska and the model Pepi apart and a secret from each other. But when the Prime Minister, Prince Ypsheim-Gindelbach, comes to visit and mixes up the wife and the mistress, the confusion and intrigues become never-ending. But even the most muddled situation can be saved with a little Viennese charm and in three-four time and even the most intractable moralist will be converted by the wild 'Wiener Blut', the Viennese blood.

After the success of his "Gypsy Baron", Johann Strauss initially no longer wanted to compose for the stage. It is thanks to the commitment of the composer and arranger Adolf Müller jun. that the 74-year-old agreed to the production of a new operetta – but it was not to be a completely new work: Strauss and Müller took the legendary dance compositions of the celebrated Waltz King and compiled them into a "pasticcio operetta", which brings together such famous melodies such as "Wiener Blut", "Tales from the Vienna Woods" and "Wine, women and song" with wit and energy. Victor Léon and Leo Stein, the lyricists of "The Merry Widow", created a libretto full of comic mistakes and games of confusion. Strauss was no longer alive for the premiere on 26 October 1899 in Vienna's Carltheater – but his last operetta became one of the most popular and successful works of the genre. Now you can enjoy this classic operetta in a fresh, dynamic new production.
