Munich, February 22, 1943: Brother and sister Hans and Sophie Scholl, aged 24 and 21, are guillotined by the National Socialists. Their offence: Antifascist activities as part of the student resistance group known as the »White Rose«.
Udo Zimmermann's opera for young people touchingly tells of the last hours of Hans and Sophie Scholl immediately before their execution. Based on surviving original manuscripts from the brother and sister, Wolfgang Willaschek has written a libretto that provides young audiences with unfiltered access to the thoughts of the two protagonists and raises questions that have lost nothing of their topicality even today: When does fascism start? What obligation does the individual have to intervene actively in social developments instead of simply looking the other way?
