As prisoner 24601, Jean Valjean has endured many years in jail, for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving family. When he is freed in 1815, he is confronted by a brutal society that stigmatises him as a criminal. To begin a new life Valjean goes underground and is relentlessly pursued by Police Inspector Javert. Having prospered, he frees Cosette, the daughter of the grisette, Fantine, from the clutches of the unscrupulous Thénardier, and takes her under his wing. Years later the two are swept up in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, which brings a dramatic turn in the life of all concerned ...

Les Misérables is one of the world’s most successful musicals, and has been enthralling untold millions of people since its 1980 world premiere in Paris. With well over 13,000 shows, the West End production alone is now the longest running musical in London’s theatre history. Its dramatic plot is based on Victor Hugo’s eponymous novel and recounts a story of passion, betrayal, sacrifice, retribution, broken dreams and unfulfilled love. At last, the musical hit is coming to Munich, in a dramatically striking and poignant staging by Josef E. Köpplinger!
