The inhabitants of Hülsdorf-Gotha are fighting for the attention of the English nobleman Sir Edgar, who has recently moved from London into the placidly bourgeois little provincial town. But he avoids any social obligations and is more interested in a touring circus than in the villagers. The offended citizens punish him by flinging bigoted insults at him, until Sir Edgar introduces his nephew, Lord Barrat, into society there. Fascinated by the eccentric actions of the young Lord, the citizens now try to gain his favour and to imitate his behaviour – in the belief that they are thus breathing the air of the big wide world. Only when the true identity of the young Lord is revealed are the inhabitants of Hülsdorf-Gotha forced to realise that they have all made fools of themselves.
With »Der junge Lord«, Hans Werner Henze and Ingeborg Bachmann have created their sixth joint work in which they throw a wickedly ironic light on small-town attitudes. »Der junge Lord« is Brigitte Fassbaender's third directorial project at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz.
