Little Jacob lives with his parents in a hole under an old tree right by the sea. The family is desperately poor, but Jacob feels fine. One day, he catches a talking fish who promises to make all his dreams come true if he will set him free and let him live. Jacob initially does not know what he should wish for, apart from new shoes. But when his mother and father hear about the strange fish, Jacob has to carry on wishing: a house, a castle, a dream holiday ... Jacob and his parents grow richer and richer, but do they become any happier at the same time …?
Leonard Evers' »Gold!«, based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale »The Fisherman and His Wife«, tells a story about power and greed that tears a family from happy poverty to painful wealth. The hardest hit is little Jacob, who, however, grows during the course of the plot and learns to become more self-confident and more independent. The Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz transforms gyms and school halls into the fairy-tale setting for this curious yet profound story and, with one singer and a percussionist, tells of the fate of little Jacob and his family. And the young spectators also have an important part to play in the action too!
