How does the Parisian aristocracy while away its time on the eve of the Revolution? The Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont make a rather nasty bet with each other – for amusement, out of revenge and to prove to themselves that they are superior to their fellow human beings. If Valmont succeeds in seducing the virtuous Madame de Tourvel, he will be rewarded by a night of love with the Marquise! 'Seduction' is the main theme of the famously frivolous novel of letters »Dangerous Liaisons« (»Les Liaisons dangereuses« in the original) from the pen of the French officer Pierre-Ambroise-François Choderlos de Laclos. In his bitter, angry portrayal of life in the doomed ancien régime, he describes, in 1782, the depravity of high society and provides us with a powerful study of sex as a tool in manipulative power games that touches the heart of every reader, even today. This seductive material has been filmed many times, most unforgettably in the multiple Oscar-winning Hollywood film version with Glenn Close and John Malkovich in the main roles. In a commission by the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, the famous German writing duo of Wolfgang Adenberg and Marc Schubring had transformed the highly erotic, malicious material into an exciting new musical, produced in this fascinating version by Artistic Director Josef E. Köpplinger and star choreographer Adam Cooper from London's West End.
