Is there anyone who does not know the lovely fairy tale of the Sleeping Beauty? The King and Queen, together with the whole court, have been longing for the birth of their daughter, Princess Aurora. But they had all failed to take Carabosse into account. And so Fate takes its course: On her 16th birthday, Aurora pricks her finger and, together with the castle and everyone who lives there, falls into a deep sleep – until one day, a prince comes and brings Aurora and everyone else back to life …

On 3 January 1890, Tchaikovsky's ballet "Sleeping Beauty" with choreography by Marius Petipa first saw the light of day at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Even now, it is not only considered to be one of the most successful ballets from the great Tsarist era – it is also part of the international standard repertoire, thanks primarily to Tchaikovsky's wonderful melodies. "I have the feeling that the music for this ballet will be one of my best works", the composer wrote on 22 July 1889 to his friend Nadezhda von Meck, "the action is so poetic and is so ideal for musical interpretation that it quite captivated me, and I wrote with a warmth and affection that is mirrored in the music". Together with his new dance ensemble, Ballet Director Karl Alfred Schreiner interprets the enchanting story of the unusual way in which Princess Aurora finds her prince and the role that the wicked Carabosse and the good Lilac Fairy play in a staging that is new and truly magical. You can rest assured that this familiar fairy tale still offers some enchanting surprises!

The ballet company of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz is touring China for the first time. From 30 December until 23 January, the dancers will be presenting DORNRÖSCHEN in the choreography of Ballet Director Karl Alfred Schreiner.
The tour has been developed in association with Ms. Linhui Kong, who has good contacts with event organisers in China and the Chinese Ministry of Culture. The ballet ensemble will be guesting in the 6 cities of Tianjin, Beijing, Qingdao, Zhengzhou, Changzhou and Shanghai, with two performances in each city. It is particularly worth noting the performance in the largest auditorium of the National Theatre in Beijing, which is considered to be the most important auditorium in China. The long duration of the tour – a month, from 26 December to 26 January in total – is also unusual. The guest performances will be supported by München Tourismus , Bayern Tourismus and the Freundeskreis Gärtnerplatztheater e.V. München Tourismus and Bayern Tourismus are also actively accompanying the tour and will be inviting travel journalists to join there. The Gärtnerplatztheater is therefore acting as an ambassador, in the truest sense of the word, for Munich, Bavaria and Germany.
