Adam, a bird seller from Tyrol, and his Christel, the postmistress, are madly in love. The two would also love to marry, but the mountain-climbing adventurer is not quite up to scratch with the required funds. When the (alleged) Elector rather rudely pursues Christel as she searches for a job for Adam, and Adam subsequently makes eyes at the Electress, the two “machos” really begin to lock horns. Really, can it end well at all?
Carl Zeller’s “The Bird Seller” (1891) is without doubt one of the most successful classics of the operetta genre. Hits such as Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol, Ich bin die Christel von der Post and Grüß euch Gott, alle miteinander made him world famous. The story here of young love that must battle the calculated pursuit of power, the most impertinent scheming, favouritism and truly erotic temptation, truly is timeless. Ultimately the common folk are indeed superior to the “the elite”, and no man should make any woman, “his own”. Look forward to a lively, truly Bavarian reinterpretation on Gärtnerplatz in Munich!
