The old skinflint Bartolo intends to marry his beautiful Rosina. She, however, has eyes for a stranger, who serenades her below her window. The distrusting Bartolo wants the wedding to happen all the quicker and has Rosina guarded closely. Luckily, the canny Figaro is still on the scene. For the right money the city’s best known barber can be called on for anything, and the clinking of the stranger’s coins, who in truth is Count Almaviva, unleashes an explosion of ideas in Figaro’s head.
Based on the famous comedy, Le Barbier de Séville by Beaumarchais, in 1816 the barely 24-year-old Gioachino Rossini wrote his most popular opera ever in just two weeks. And with it he spared neither the most hair-raising coloratura passages nor instrumental effects. Figaro’s entrance aria, one of the catchiest tunes in music history, Rosina’s Una voce poco fa or the storm that Rossini unleashes in the second act in the orchestra, rank among the superlative musical highpoints and guarantee entertainment for the entire family.
