Stage design

Stephan Mannteuffel

Stephan Mannteuffel studied art and theater in Paris and Berlin and received two master class prizes from Erich Wonder at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and a diploma in stage design in 1992. As early as 1991, he created the stage design for Heiner Müller's »Quartett/Mauser« in the author's production. In 1992, he designed the exhibition architecture for the crowd-puller “»Sag beim Abschied ...« at the Vienna Historical Museum and assisted Peter Greenaway with »100 Objects to Represent the World« at the Hofburg Vienna. At the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen Berlin he worked with Einar Schleef and created the space for Ulrich Zieger's world premiere »Die Mandelbrotmenge«. The world premiere of Peter Hack's »Orpheus in the Underworld« connected him with the Bauhaus Dessau and led to projects that dissolved the boundary between stage space and installation. He has worked in opera, drama and ballet at various theaters in Vienna, Augsburg, Dresden, Düsseldorf, St. Gallen, Heidelberg, Berlin, Essen, Hamburg, Linz, Graz, Bern, Braunschweig and Leipzig.

As a stage and costume designer, he has worked with Jochen Ulrich (including the world premiere of »Die Roten Schuhe« at the Aalto Theater Essen), Werner Heinrichmöller, Ralph Bridle, Ottokar Runze, Aurelia Eggers, Franziska Severin (including »Carmen« in St. Gallen) and Balázs Kovalik. He has a long-standing collaboration with Volker Hesse. In 2016, they opened the Gotthard tunnel on both sides with »Sace del Gottardo« with productions involving more than 500 performers. At the Tell Festival, at the Zwingli Festival in Zurich Münster, as well as in other productions and in collaboration with the Accademia Dimitri, productions were created in all areas of theater. At the Bayreuth Festival in 2022 and 2023, he worked with Valentin Schwarz and Andrea Cozzi on the technical realization of Richard Wagner's »Ring des Nibelungen«.In 2025, Stephan Mannteuffel makes his debut at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz as set designer for Handel’s “Alcina” alongside director Magdalena Fuchsberger.
