Stefano Poda

In his search for aesthetic and conceptual unity, the artistic work of Stefano Poda always encompasses direction, set design, costume design, lightning and choreography in a personal seal founded on a visionary, multi-level imprint balanced between ancient images and contemporary art. He has developed a language that is understandable in the same way as music, sculpture, painting and architecture can be.

His »Faust« at the Teatro Regio of Torino in 2015, co-production with Israeli Opera of Tel Aviv and Opéra of Lausanne, has been screened as an opera film with great success in movie theatres around the world (DVD Unitel). As well as »Turandot« in 2018 (DVD Unitel), or »Thaïs« by Massenet in 2008 at Teatro Regio di Torino (DVD Arthaus), which has been included in the list of twenty landmark opera productions over the past twenty years, compiled by »BBC Music Magazine« in 2012. Stefano Poda has been awarded the most prestigious »Prix Claude Rostand de la Critique Française 2019« for »Ariane et Barbe-Bleue« by Paul Dukas at Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse (»Best opera production of 2019«). He was invited as special guest to the PQ Prague Quadrennial 2019, the 14th edition of the largest international festival of theater and stage design.

Stefano Poda’s recent works include »Tosca« (2021) at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, »Norma« (2021), »Les Contes d’Hoffmann« (2019), »Ariodante« (2016) and »Lucia di Lammermoor« (2017, recorded by arte) at the Opéra de Lausanne, »Nabucco« (2020) and »Il trittico« (2011) at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Korean National Opera, »Roméo et Juliette« (2018) at the Chinese National Centre for the Performing Arts Beijing, »Boris Godunov« (2017) and »Andrea Chénier« (2015) at the Korean National Opera, »Thaïs« (2015), Carlos Gomes’ »Fosca« and »Titan« (2016, a choreography on Gustav Mahler’s Symphony no. 1) at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, »L’elisir d’amore« (2016) at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg, »Otello« (2015) at the Hungarian State Opera Budapest, »Tristan und Isolde« (2014, conducted by Zubin Mehta) at the opening of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, »Il trovatore« (2012) at the Athens Festival in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, at the Teatro Colón Buenos Aires (2011), Alessandro Solbiati’s »Leggenda« (2011, DVD EMA Vinci Records) at the Teatro Regio di Torino and »La forza del destino« (2011, DVD Unitel) at the Teatro Regio di Parma.

He staged »Tosca« at the Gärtnerplatztheater in 2019.
