Important stations in recent years have repeatedly been Salzburg (including, most recently, Vivaldi's »Farnace« at Salzburger Landestheater and Horváth's »Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald« at Schauspielhaus Salzburg) and in Meiningen (including Mozart's »Die Zauberflöte«).

At Burgtheater in Vienna he was engaged for a stage version of Márai's »Wandlungen einer Ehe« at Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz and at Schauspielhaus Wien he repeatedly worked as director and project manager in connection with the »theatre series» format.

Staging has also taken him to Stuttgart's Old Theatre, Landestheater Schwaben, the Municipal Theatre of Klagenfurt, Landestheater Eisenach and the Chateau Festival at Langenlois.

Rudolf Frey made his directing debut at the Viennese Burgtheater (»Es ist Zeit. Abriss« by Albert Ostermaier at Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz as well as Martin Heckmann's »Das wundervolle Zwischending«) where he was engaged as a directing assistant when only 21 years old and where he worked together with directors like Andrea Breth, Martin Kušej, Karin Beier and Luc Bondy.
