Robert Meyer

Robert Meyer was born in Bad Reichenhall. From 1971 to 1974 he studied acting at the Mozarteum Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Salzburg. While still studying he appeared at Salzburg Landestheater.

In 1974 he was recruited by the Vienna Burgtheater where he remained a member of the ensemble for 33 years. He played over 90 roles there, including in works by Johann Nestroy, Jakob Michael, Reinhold Lenz, Bertolt Brecht, Nikolai Gogol, Herbert Achternbusch, Arthur Schnitzler, Botho Strauss, William Shakespeare and Thomas Bernhard. With highly successful solo evening performances such as Nestroy's »Häuptling Abendwind«, »Johann Nestroy: Briefe und Couplets«, »Wilhelm Busch: Max und Moritz und andere gereimte Sachen«, »Heiteres über das Reisen – Texte von Tucholsky, Thoma, Kishon u. a.« as well as the opera parody »Tannhäuser in 80 Minuten« by Binder/Nestroy with the new Vienna Concert Schrammel Singers, Robert Meyer constantly had a full house at the Vienna Burgtheater. He also celebrated major successes in musical theatres, among others at the Vienna Volksoper as Sigismund Sülzheimer (»Im Weißen Rössl«), Sancho Panza (»Man of La Mancha«) and Alfred P. Doolittle (»My Fair Lady«) as well as at the Vienna State Opera as Frosch (»Die Fledermaus«).

Robert Meyer played roles in numerous films, including as Erich in »Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald«, as Adlatus Fuchs in »Herr Ober«, in »Die Ameisenstrasse« and, most recently, in »Und Äktschn!«.He is also known to a wide audience from various TV productions, having played in »Derrick«, »Der Alte«, »Tatort«, »Julia«, »Schlosshotel Orth«, »Der Bestseller«, »Soko Kitzbühel«, »Soko Donau Wien« and »Der Bulle von Tölz«.

Since 1993 he has also been a producer, among other places at Reichenau Summer Theatre, at Graz Schauspielhaus, at operetta festivals in Bad Ischl, at the Academy Theatre in Vienna as well as at the Vienna Burgtheater.

Robert Meyer was director of the Volksoper Wien from 2007 to 2022. Since then he has also appeared in numerous roles on stage at Volksoper. In the 2008/2009 season he was a producer for the first time (with Oscar Strausʼs »Die lustigen Nibelungen«), 2010/2011 he debuted as opera director with Giacomo Pucciniʼs »Il tabarro«/»Gianni Schicchi«. Further works are Johann Nestroyʼs/Jacques Offenbachʼs satirical operetta »Vent du Soir«, »Der Kongress tanzt« as well as the world premieres of the pop-opera »Antonia und der Reißteufel« and the BaRock-opera »Vivaldi – Die fünfte Jahreszeit« by Christian Kolonovits.

Robert Meyer has been awarded the Nestroy Ring (1993) and the Kainz Medal (1999). In 1997 he was appointed as Chamber Actor. In 2013 on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday he was awarded the Golden Medal of Honour for Services to the Land of Vienna.

At the Gärtnerplatztheater he played Pelikan in »Die Zirkusprinzessin« in 2014, created the character of Alfred P. Doolittle in the Bavarian version of »My Fair Lady« and was on stage as Frosch in »Die Fledermaus«.
