Paolo Giani Cei

Paolo Giani Cei was born in Torino and since 2008 has been following Stefano Poda’s productions, as artistic collaborator and assistant for dramaturgy, direction, sets, costumes and light design. For the inauguration of the 77th Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 2014, he took care of the dramaturgy of »Tristan und Isolde«, in 2016 he realised the dramaturgy of »Titan«, a complete choreography on Mahler’s 1st symphony, for the São Paulo National Ballet.

In 2014 he personally staged »Nabucco« for the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, in 2016 he signed a new production of »La Voix humaine« by Poulenc in the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. For the Teatro Verdi of Padova he staged several titles, among them: »Madama Butterfly«, »La traviata«, »I Capuleti e i Montecchi«, »Lucia di Lammermoor«, »La bohème«, »La Cenerentola« and »Don Giovanni«.

Among the latest opera productions in which he has been assistant director are Verdi’s »La forza del destino« (Festival Verdi di Parma, 2014), Giordano’s »Andrea Chénier« (Korean National Opera, 2015), Gounod’s »Faust« (Teatro Regio di Torino, 2015; Opera de Lausanne, 2016; Israeli Opera Tel Aviv, 2017), Verdi’s »Otello (Hungarian State Opera Budapest, 2015), Gounod’s »Roméo et Juliette« (China National Opera Beijing, 2018),  Puccini’s »Turandot (Teatro Regio di Torino, 2018), Dukas’ »Ariane et Barbe-bleue« (Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, 2019), Gluck’s »Orfeo ed Euridice« (Plovdiv Ancient Theatre, 2019) and Offenbach’s »Les Contes d’Hoffmann« (Opera de Lausanne 2019).
