Matija Meić
Matija Meić was born in Zagreb. After graduating from the Blagoje Bersa Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Viktorija Badrov, he began vocal training at the Zagreb Academy of Music with bass-baritone Giorgio Surian. For the past three years, he also has been working with Claudia Visca at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts.
In 2010, while still a student, the baritone made his debut as a solo artist with the Croatian National Theatre as Levi in Zajcʼs »Nikola Šubić Zrinski«. In 2011 he performed Escamillo in the Zagreb Academy of Music production of Bizetʼs »Carmen« at Lisinski Concert Hall and reprised the bullfighter with the Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka.
In April 2013 the baritone made his debut as Figaro in Rossiniʼs »Il barbiere di Siviglia« at the Zagreb Opera House, where he also sang the roles of Schaunard in Puccini’s »La bohème« and Belcore in Donizettiʼs »Lʼelisir d'amore«. At this theater, additionally, he covered the title role in Blagoje Bersaʼs »Der Schuster von Delft«. In June 2013 he sang the role of Guglielmo in Mozartʼs »Così fan tutte« at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. In 2014 he returned to the Zagreb Opera House as Belcore and Figaro and made his role debut as »Don Giovanni« in the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts production of Mozartʼs eponymous opera at the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn. An engagement as Don Alvaro in Rossiniʼs »Il viaggio a Reims« followed in June 2014 at the Bad Wildbad Belcanto Opera Festival. 2016 he sang Ping (»Turandot«) at the Bregenzer Festspiele.
On the concert stage, Matija Meić has sung with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra (»Carmina Burana«, Mozartʼs »Requiem« and »Coronation Mass«), the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra (Beethovenʼs Symphony No. 9), the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (»Matthäuspassion«), the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra (Ravelʼs »Don Quichotte à Dulcinée«), the Zagreb Symphony Orchestra (»Die Jahreszeiten«, »Messiah«), the Belgrade Philharmonic, and the Zadar Festival Orchestra for »Musical Evenings in St. Donatus«.
In 2007 and 2009, respectively, he won First Prize at two Croatian national competitions, and, subsequently, First Prize and a Special Prize at the 2010 »Bruna Spiler International Singing Competition« in Herceg Novi, Montenegro. In April 2013 the baritone won First Prize and Four Interpretation Prizes at the »Iuventus Canti Competition« in Slovakia, and was awarded »Young Singer of the Year« in Zagrebʼs »Molto Cantabile Competition«. In October of the same year Matija Meić performed at the »Beaumarchais Concours Prizewinners Concerts« held in Vienna at the Mozarthaus and Vienna State Operaʼs Gustav-Mahler-Saal. At the 2014 »Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition« in Helsinki he won Second Prize and a Special Prize for »Performance of a Finnish Song By a Non-Finn«.
He made his debut at the Gärtnerplatztheater in 2015 as Guglielmo. From the season 2016/2017 on he is ensemble member and sang roles like Don Giovanni and Leporello (»Don Giovanni«), Dandini (»La Cenerentola«), Peter Besenbinder (»Hänsel und Gretel«), König (»Die Kluge«), Marcello (»La bohème«), Georges Danton (»Dantons Tod«), Figaro (»Il barbiere di Siviglia«) as well as Lindorf, Coppélius, Miracle and Dappertutto (»Les Contes d’Hoffmann«) and the title role in »Eugen Onegin«.
