Mari Benedek

The costume and stage designer Mari Benedek trained at the Szurikov Academy in Moscow and at the Hungarian Academy of the Performing Arts in Budapest. She has received many international awards, for example at the International Theatre Festival Rijeka, the National Theatre Festival and from the Hungarian Theatre Critics’ Association.

Mari Benedek has worked with famous directors such as János Szász, Péter Valló, Sándor Zsótér and Balázs Kovalik. Her most important works include »Der Meister und Margarita« at the Chekhov Arts Theatre in Moscow, »Il barbiere di Siviglia« at the Szeged National Theatre in Hungary, »Herzog Blaubarts Burg« at the Miskolc Opera Festival and »Der kaukasische Kreidekreis«, »Hair« and »Tod in Theben« at Det norske Teatret in Oslo.

Mari Benedek has already created many costume and stage designs for the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest, for example, for productions such as »Peter Grimes«, »Der Zwerg«, »Erwartung«, »Le nozze di Figaro«, »Così fan tutte«, »Don Giovanni«, »Orpheus und Eurydike«, »Fidelio«, »Elektra, »Xerxes«, »Mefistofele« and »Die Zauberflöte«. She has created costumes and stage designs for the National Theatre in Budapest for »Richard III.«, »Penthesilea« and »König Lear«. In addition, she was responsible for »Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui« and »Boris Godunov« at the Örkény Színház Theatre and »Peer Gynt« and »Bánk bán« at the Krétakör Theatre in Budapest.

In addition, Mari Benedek teaches costume design at the University of Theatre and Film Arts Budapest and at the Hungarian University of the Performing Arts.
