Levy Sekgapane
Levy Sekgapane was born in Kroonstad, South Africa, and studied with Kamal Khan and Hanna van Niekerk at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town. In 2015 he became a member of the Young Ensemble of the Semperoper Dresden. He is a 1st prize winner at the Belvedere International Singing Competition (2015), the Monserrat Caballé Singing Competition (2015) and Placido Domingo’s »Operalia« (2017). In 2019, Prima Classic released his first solo CD with Rossini arias ‒ recorded with the Munich Radio Orchestra conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti.
Two roles have developed into his parade roles: Count Almaviva in »Il barbiere di Siviglia«, which he interpreted in a new production at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, the Opéra national de Paris, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Opéra national de Bordeaux and the Vienna State Opera, and Don Ramiro in »La Cenerentola«, which he performed at the Bavarian State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, the Semperoper Dresden and the Zurich Opera (alongside Cecilia Bartoli).
He has also sung Nadir (»Les Pêcheurs de perles«) at the Cape Town Opera, Ernesto (»Don Pasquale«) at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari and at the Vienna State Opera, Lord Arturo Talbo (»I puritani«) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Idreno (»Semiramide«) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Lindoro (»L’italiana in Algeri«) at the Zurich Opera House.
Other highlights of his career include his debut at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, where he sang the first ever New Year’s Eve gala concert with Olga Peretyatko under the baton of James Conlon, »Adina« at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, »Enrico di Borgogna« at the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo, »Idomeneo« at the Salzburg Festival and »L’elisir d’amore« at the Pfingstfestspiele at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden.
