Johannes Leiacker

Johannes Leiacker was born in Landshut, Germany. After training to become a carpenter in Regensburg and studying design in Wiesbaden, his first theatre appointment was at the Schauspiel Frankfurt. He designed sets for theatres including the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf, the Schillertheater in Berlin and the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel. In addition, he has worked at opera houses in New York, London, Vienna, Zürich, Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg, Brussels, Lisbon, Copenhagen, Los Angeles and Moscow and at the Salzburg, Bregenz and Baden-Baden festivals. He works closely with such directors at Peter Konwitschny, Dietrich Hilsdorf, Guy Joosten and Christof Loy.

In 1984, he was awarded the Artistic Sponsorship Award of the Land of North Rhine Westphalia, and in 1996 and 2009 he was voted set designer of the year by the critics writing for the journal »Opernwelt«; in addition, he won the Lawrence Olivier Award in the category »Best New Opera Production« for »Tristan und Isolde« at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in 2010.

Between 2004 and 2010 he was Professor for Set Design and Costume at the University of the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts.
