Stage and costume design
Herbert Schäfer
Herbert Schäfer was born in North Germany and worked as a set designer at various theatres and opera houses, for productions in Bremen, Hanover, Darmstadt, Zurich, Cologne and Berlin, among others.
In addition to his work as a stage designer, Herbert Schäfer also works as a director, dramaturge and translator. He staged, for example, Paul Rudnick's »Jeffrey«, Charles Ludlam's »Das Geheimnis der Irma Vep« and Manuel Puig's »Der Kuss der Spinnenfrau«. He also developed Homer's »Odyssee« for the Bad Hersfeld Festival.
A long-standing collaboration links him with the directors Torsten Fischer (Strindberg's »Der Vater«, Mozart's »Die Entführung aus dem Serail« and Rossini's »La Cenerentola« in Cologne, the first performance of Peter Ruzicka's »Hölderlin. Eine Expedition« at the Berlin State Opera, Richard Strauss's »Daphne« at the Dresdner Semperoper, Wagner's »Der fliegende Holländer« at Stadttheater Klagenfurt, Gluck's »Telemaco« at Vienna's Theater an der Wien) and Günter Krämer (Mozart's »La clemenza di Tito« in Schwetzingen, Franz Schmidt's »Notre Dame« at the Semperoper, Lessing's »Miss Sara Sampson« at the Berliner Ensemble, Goethe's »Faust. Zweiter Teil» at the Frankfurter Schauspiel and Thomas Mann's »Joseph und seine Brüder« at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna).
