Gyula Rab

Hungarian tenor Gyula Rab studied at the International Opera School of the Royal College of Music in London, was a Sir Roger and Lady Carr Soirée d’Or scholarship holder and graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He made his operatic debut at Wroclaw Opera in 2014 as Louis in Péter Eötvös’ »Angels in America« (conducted by the composer), immediately following which he sang the tenor solo in Karl Jenkins’ »The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace« in a gala concert commemorating the outbreak of the First World War with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall London. In 2015 he was a finalist for the Kathleen Ferrier Award at London’s Wigmore Hall and participated in the Jerwood Young Artist Programme at the Glyndebourne Festival, where he was heard as A Christian and Nearco in Donizetti’s »Poliuto«.

Other engagements included Osra in Pergolesi’s »Adriano in Siria« at Cadogan Hall, Handel’s »Messiah« with the Valencia Symphony Orchestra, the tenor solo in Mozart’s »Requiem« with the Danubia Symphony Orchestra, Kodály’s »Psalmus Hungarius« with the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Alidoro in Rossini’s »La Cenerentola« at the Budapest Spring Festival and The Lover in Purcell’s »The Fairy Queen« at the Hungarian State Opera Budapest. In the summer of 2017 he was a guest at the iSING China Festival and sang Rinuccio in Puccini’s »Gianni Schicchi« in Suzhou, China, among other roles.

In the 2016/2017 season Gyula Rab was a member of the International Opera Studio of Zurich Opera, in 2017/2018 he made his role debuts at the Hungarian State Opera Budapest as Ferrando in »Così fan tutte« and Tamino in »Die Zauberflöte«, at the Gärtnerplatztheater he interpreted Ernesto (»Don Pasquale«), Don Ottavio (»Don Giovanni«) and Tamino. As part of a tour of the Budapest Operetta Theatre, he made guest appearances as Conte Almaviva (»Il barbiere di Siviglia«) at numerous theatres.

Since the 2018 / 2019 season he is a member of the ensemble of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, where he has already appeared on stage as Ernesto (»Don Pasquale«), Don Ottavio (»Don Giovanni«), Don Ramiro (»La Cenerentola«), Ferrando, Tamino and Almaviva, among others.
