Erwin Windegger

Erwin Windegger was born in Merano. His musical repertory includes, besides the title roles in »Sweeney Todd« and »The King and I«, roles like Cervantes/Don Quixote »Man of La Mancha«, Zaza/Albin (»La Cage aux Folles«), Javert (»Les Misérables«), Petrucchio (»Kiss me, Kate«), Frank N. Further (»The Rocky Horror Show«), Pontius Pilate (»Jesus Christ Superstar«), Perón (»Evita«), Ullerin (in the Bavarian folk opera »Der Goggolori«) and the narrators in »Blutsbrüder« and »Into the Woods«. In addition, he also played in »Sunset Boulevard«, »Chess«, »Wake Up«, »Guys and Dolls«, »Beauty and the Beast«, »Männer«, »Singin’ in the Rain« and »West Side Story«.

As an actor he has personified the title roles in »Jedermann« and »Der Zerissene«, as uncle and personnel manager in Kafka’s »America«, Count Almaviva in Turrini’s »Der tollste Tag«, Tiger Brown in »Die Dreigroschenoper«, Gayev in »Der Kirschgarten« and Mr Hannay in »39 Steps«.

He staged the musicals »Evita« and »Jesus Christ Superstar« for Bolzano’s Combined Theatres at the Bolzano Municipal Theatre and the Second German Channel (ZDF) recruited him for the TV series »Ein Fall für Zwei«.

As a freelance entertainer he has toured Germany, Austria and Switzerland and has played, among other places, at Deutsches Theater München, at the Old Opera in Frankfurt, in Cologne's Musical Dome and Berlin’s Theater am Kurfürstendamm. He has made guest appearances at the Graz Opera, at the Vienna Volksoper, the Raimund Theatre, the Ronacher Theatre, Akzent and Metropol, at Hanover State Opera House, Staatstheater Kassel, at the municipal theatres of Klagenfurt, Augsburg and Bolzano, at the Stage in Baden as well as at the summer festival plays in Bad Hersfeld, Feuchtwangen and Stockerau.

At Gärtnerplatztheater he has been seen in roles like Elisha Whitney (»Anything Goes«), Cervantes/Don Quixote (»Man of La Mancha«), Baron Bomburst (»Chitti Chitti Bang Bang«), Prince Sergius Wladimir (»Die Zirkusprinzessin«), Pontius Pilatus (»Jesus Christ Superstar«), Bassa Selim (»Die Entführung aus dem Serail«), Azolan (»Gefährliche Liebschaften«), R. F. Simpson (»Singinʼ in the Rain«), Fredrik Egerman (»A Little Night Music«), John Cunlight (»Viktoria und ihr Husar«), Jonathan Jeremiah Peachum (»Die Dreigroschenoper«), Polizeikonzipist (»Liliom«), Herzog Ottokar von Grevlingen (»Die Faschingsfee«), Baron Mirko Zeta (»Die lustige Witwe«), Wilhelm Giesecke (»Im weißen Rössl«), Bernadette Bardot (»Priscilla – Königin der Wüste«), Colonel Pickering (»My Fair Lady«), Eduard Tobler (»Drei Männer im Schnee«), Evangelist in the German-language premiere of Monty Python’s »Life of Brian« and Antonio Salieri (»Mozart muss sterben«). From the season 2016/2017 on he is an ensemble member of the Gärtnerplatztheater. In 2022 he was awarded the title »Bayerischer Kammerschauspieler« by the Bavarian State Minister for Science and Art.
