Elaine Ortiz Arandes

Elaine Ortiz Arandes was born in Puerto Rico where she studied singing at the Conservatorio de Música. She has lived in Germany since 1985, where she extended her singing technique in classes with Ingeborg Müller. After a three-year engagement with the United Municipal Theatres of Krefeld/Mönchengladbach, she was signed up in 1988 by Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, and she is still a permanent member of its ensemble. She has appeared here since then in roles including Violetta Valéry (»La traviata«), Gilda (»Rigoletto«), Susanna (»Die Hochzeit des Figaro«), Norina (»Don Pasquale«), Amalia (»I masnadieri«), Emila Marti (»Die Sache Makropulos«) and Mephisto (»Dr. Faust jr.«).

Her repertoire also includes Pamina (»Die Zauberflöte«), Donna Anna (»Don Giovanni«), Cio-Cio-San (»Madama Butterfly«), Musetta (»La bohème«), Gretel (»Hänsel und Gretel«), Maria (»West Side Story«), Amitta (»Der geduldige Socrates«), the Vixen (»Das schlaue Füchslein«), Fräulein Flink (»Onkel Präsident«), the Virgin (»Johanna auf dem Scheiterhaufen«), Iris (»Semele«) and Despina (»Così fan tutte«). For some years, Elaine Ortiz Arandes has been working successfully with the pianist José-Daniel Martínez. The focal points of their work together are the songs of Johannes Brahms and of French, Spanish and Latin American composers. Guest appearances have also taken her to Austria, France, the Netherlands, the USA and Japan.

Because of her many years of artistic activity at Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, Elaine Ortiz Arandes was awarded the title Bayerische Kammersängerin (Bavarian Chamber Singer) in April 2014 by Dr Ludwig Spaenle, Bavarian State Minister for Education and Culture, Science and Art.
