Bernd Mottl

The German director Bernd Mottl is active in opera, theatre, musicals and operettas. He has worked at various theatres in German-speaking countries, from the Leipzig Opera to the Bern Theatre and the Vienna Volksoper. In Berlin, he has directed at the Renaissance Theatre, the Maxim Gorki Theatre and the Deutsche Oper. He also made a name for himself here with the production of »La Cage aux Folles« at the Bar jeder Vernunft and »Frau Luna« with an all-star cast at the Tipi am Kanzleramt. He regularly directs at the Hanover State Opera (including »My Fair Lady«, »Werther«, »Der fliegende Holländer«, »Der junge Lord«), at the Cologne Opera (including »Die Csárdásfürstin«, »Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria«, »L’elisir d’amore«, »Die lustige Witwe«) and at the Graz Theatre and Opera, most recently »Il cappello di paglia di Firenze« by Nino Rota. At the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, his repertoire ranges from Bernstein’s »Candide« and Tabori’s »Mein Kampf« to »Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg«, Massenet’s »Manon« and »Anna Nicole« by Marc-Anthony Turnage. He received the »Best Production« award at the 2019 Hessische Theatertage for his interpretation of John For’s »Too bad she was a whore«. He directed »La bohème« for the first time at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in 2019.
