Alexander Franzen

Alexander Franzen grew up in Cologne, San Francisco and Zurich and trained as a musical performer and classical singer at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen.

His wide-ranging repertoire in operetta and musical includes roles such as Prof. Henry Higgins (»My Fair Lady«), Sweeney Todd (»Sweeney Todd«), Leopold (»Im weißen Rössl«), Fredrik Egerman (»A Little Night Music«), Mackie Messer (»Die Dreigroschenoper«), Riff (»West Side Story«), Robert (»Company«), Chauvelin (»The Scarlett Pimpernel«), Stone (»City of Angels«), Vittorio Vidale (»Sweet Charity«), Dr. Falke (»Die Fledermaus«), King Herod (»Jesus Christ Superstar«), Gabey (»On the Town«) and numerous other roles, which he performed on German-speaking stages such as the Berlin Theater des Westens, the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Aalto-Theater Essen, the Staatstheater Augsburg, the Cologne Opera, the Leipzig Opera, the Saarland State Theatre Saarbrücken, the Tyrolean Landestheater Innsbruck, the St. Gallen Theatre and at the Bregenz Festival. He has worked with directors such as Josef E. Köpplinger, Stanislav Moša, Ulrich Wiggers, Roland Hüve, Thomas Winter, Peter Konwitschny, Francesca Zambello, Katja Wolff and conductors such as Wayne Marshall, Dirk Kaftan, Anthony Bramall, Georg Fritzsch and William Ward Murta. He has also appeared as a soloist at the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich, the Laieszhalle in Hamburg and the Berlin Philharmonie.

Alexander Franzen has been an ensemble member of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz since the 2021/2022 season, where he has interpreted Pangloss/Voltaire (»Candide«), Child Catcher (»Chitty Chitty Bang Bang«), Johann Kesselhuth (»Drei Männer im Schnee«), Frank (»Die Fledermaus«) and Baron Grog (»La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein«), among others. More recently, he has appeared on stage here as Ron Carlisle in the European premiere of »Tootsie« and at the Augsburg State Theatre as Billy Flynn (»Chicago«) and Cardinal Richelieu (»3 Musketiers«).
