Alex Frei
Alex Frei received his professional education in Munich with Jutta Röthel, at the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam and at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York.
He was engaged as a soloist with Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, with the Augsburg Ballet and in the dance company of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz. He was also a guest artist with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne. He has worked with numerous choreographers, including Philip Taylor, Blanca Li, Carolyn Carlson, Cayetano Soto, Davide Bombana, Christian Spuck, Caroline Finn, Aszure Burton and Crystal Pite. He has also performed in pieces by Jiří Kylián, Nacho Duato and Mauro Bigonzetti. He was engaged as choreographic assistant for the premiere of Davide Bombana’s »Mare Nostrum« at the National Ballet in Sarajevo.
His musical career includes the productions of »42nd Street«, »Copacabana«, »My Fair Lady«, »Fiddler on the Roof«, »Marilyn – Das Musical«, »La Cage aux Folles«, »Cats«, »Cabaret«, »Anything Goes«, »Bodyguard«, »Priscilla – Queen of the Desert« and »Chicago« in Germany and in Denmark and France in the same production as Spirit of Fosse and as Assistant Dance Captain. He also served as Artistic Director for the tour of »Flashdance – The Musical«.
In 2021 Alex Frei completed his master’s degree in opera directing at the Accademia dell’Opera di Verona. He joined the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz as a choreographic assistant and rehearsal director in the 2020/2021 season and assisted Staatsintendant Josef E. Köpplinger with his production of »Die Fledermaus« at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence as well as in Munich. As a choreographer, he developed the musicals »Die kleine Meerjungfrau« (director: Silvia Armbruster) at the theatre in Kempten, »Next to Normal« (director: Gil Mehmert) and »La Cage aux Folles« (director: Axel Ranisch) at the Bühnen Bern, the opera »Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor« (director: Brigitte Fassbaender) and the new operetta »Oh! Oh! Amelio!« (director: Gabi Rothmüller) at the Gärtnerplatztheater and, most recently, the musical »Mozart!« (director: Andreas Gergen) at the Prinzregententheater in Munich.
